Poem

Abu ‘l-‘Ainaa proposed to a girl, but she didn’t like his appearance.

So, he wrote a poem to her:

“If you are disgusted by my face,
remember that I am a brilliant intellectual,
not an ignoramus, nor an idiot.”

She replied: “It wasn’t for the purpose of writing letters that I needed you.”

قال أَبو العيناء: خطبت امْرَأَة فاستقبحتني فكتبت إليها:
فإن تنفري من قبح وجهي فإني
أريب أديب لا غبي ولا فدم
فأجابت: لَيْسَ لديوان الرسائل أريدك.
الفدْم: قليل الفهم.
