Fighting The Inner-Self

The Prophet said:

وَالْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ فِي طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ
وَالْمُهَاجِر من هجر الْخَطَايَا والذنُوب
“The Mujahid (warrior) is the one who fights/strives against (the evil in) himself, to align it with God’s obedience.
And the Muhajir (migrant) is the one who migrates (abandons) from sins and transgression.”

[“Mishkat al-Masabih”, 33, 34].

So if you fight against the evils of your own soul, such as the desire to drink wine, fornicate, steal, jealousy, hatred, etc. and you strive to abandon sins, you are a mujahid & a muhaajir, fi sabilillah… wherever you may be.
