A Funny Incident

The funny Tabi’i Imam A’mash – الأعمش

A’mash had a silly son.
He once told his son: “Go and buy us a rope to hang clothes on it.”
His son asked: “How long?”
A’mash said: “10 cubits.”
His son asked: “How thick?”
A’mash said: “As thick as you!”

[Alternative Translation: “As thick/wide as the disaster that you are upon me!”]

قيل: إن الأعمش كان له ولدٌ مغفلٌ، فقال له: اذهب فاشترِ لنا حبلًا للغسيل.
فقال ابنه: يا أبت، طول كم؟
قال: عشرة أذرعٍ.
قال: في عرض كم؟
قال: في عرض مصيبتي فيك.
