Lies Of Proposers

They say: كُلُّ خَاطِبٍ كَاذِبٌ

A man who proposes for marriage often lies…

It’s said: a man sent his dad to propose on his behalf with a girls father.
The man said: ‘my son is so powerful, if he just waves his hand, 50 cars stop for him!’
They thought he must be some big guy, his son was just a traffic officer!

It is also reported:

The Prophet Sulaiman could communicate with birds.
It says in old books that he was once walking with his companions and they saw two birds chirping.
The Prophet Sulaiman asked his companions: ‘Do you know what he is saying to her?’
They said: ‘No, O Prophet of God.’
He said: ‘He is proposing to her and telling her: ‘if you choose me, I will build you a nest in any of the chambers of Damascus you wish!’
But he is blagging, because the chambers of Damascus are made of rock and he will not be able to carve a nest in them. Every bridegroom [proposer to a female] lies.’

It’s mentioned by Imam al-Mawardi:

‎قَالَ الإِماَمُ المَاوردي رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ في أدب الدُّنياوالدين :
‎حُكِيَ أَنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ دَاوُد [ عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَام ] ُ مَرَّ بِعُصْفُورٍ يَدُورُ حَوْلَ عُصْفُورَةٍ ، فَقَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ : هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا يَقُولُ لَهَا ؟ قَالُوا : لَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، قَال َ: إنَّهُ يَخْطُبُهَا لِنَفْسِهِ وَيَقُولُ لَهَا زَوِّجِينِي نَفْسَك أُسْكِنُكِ أَيَّ غُرَفِ دِمَشْقَ شِئْتِ .
‎ وَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ : كَذَبَ الْعُصْفُورُ فَإِنَّ غُرَفَ دِمَشْقَ مَبْنِيَّةٌ بِالصُّخُورِ لَا يَقْدِرُ أَنْ يُسْكِنَهَا هُنَاكَ ، وَلَكِنْ كُلُّ خَاطِبٍ كَاذِبٌ

And Ibn Kathir:

‎مَرَّ سُلَيْمَانُ بن دَاود بِعُصْفُورٍ يَدُورُ حَوْلَ عُصْفُورَةٍ ، فَقَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ : أَتَدْرُونَ مَا يَقُولُ ؟! قَالُوا : وَمَا يَقُولُ يَا نَبِيّ اللّه ؟! قَالَ : يَخْطُبُهَا إِلَى نَفْسِهِ وَيَقُولُ : تَزَوجِيني ، أُسْكنك أيّ غُرَف دمشق شِئْتِ ، قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ عَليْهِ السَّلام : لِأَنَّ غُرَف دِمَشْق مَبْنِيَّةٌ بِالصّخْر لَا يَقْدر أَنْ يسْكنها أحد ، وَلَكِنَّ كُل خَاطِبٍ كَذَّاب .
