Everyone loves food, but it is said:
على المرء أن يأكل ليحيا، لا أن يحيا ليأكل
‘One should eat to live, and not live to eat.’
It is reported :
وقيل لشريح القاضي أيهما أطيب اللوز ينق أم الجوز ينق؟! فقال: لا أحكم على غائب!!.
The judge Shuraih Al-Qadhi was asked which is better, a type of food containing almonds or a type of food containing walnuts? He said: ‘I do not judge the absent…’
ورأى أبو الأسود الدؤلي رجلاً يلقم لقماً منكراً فقال: كيف اسمك؟! فقال: لقمان. فقال: صدق الذي سماك.
Abu al-Aswad al-Du’ali saw a man taking taking big morsels and asked: ‘What is your name?!’ He said: ‘Luqman.’ [it means someone who eats a lot]. He said: ‘The person who gave you this name was right!’
وقال أبو اليقظان: كان هلال بن الأسعر التميمي أكولا، فيزعمون أنه أكل فصيلا وأكلت امرأته فصيلا؛ فلما أراد أن يجامعها لم يصل إليها، فقالت له: وكيف تصل إليّ وبيني وبينك بعيران!
Hilal bin Al-As`ar Al-Tamimi was a heavy eater. Once he ate an entire baby camel, and his wife ate another baby camel. When he intended to have intercourse with her, he couldn’t reach her. His wife said to him: ‘How can you reach me, when there are two camels between us?’
