Death of a Donkey … موتٌ خيرٌ مِنْ مَوْتٍ!

One of Sibawayh’s servants came running to him saying that his donkey is strangling itself with the rope around its neck, but he made a grammatical mistake in this sentence.
Sibawayh, being a grammarian, corrected him on the spot.
The servant said: “Let’s get to the donkey before it dies!!”
Sibawayh said: “It is better that a donkey dies, than that the Arabic language dies!”

موتٌ خيرٌ مِنْ مَوْتٍ!
رأى أحد خدم سيبويهِ حبلا قد طوَّق حِمارَ سيبويهِ وكاد يخنقه، فذهب مسرعاُ ليخبره قائلا: يا سيدي، تلفلف الحبل في رقبة الحمار.
فقال سيبويه : يا بليد، قل: “لُفَّ الحبلُ حول رقبة الحِمار”.
فقال الخادم : لكن يا سيدي، أدرك الحمار قبل أن يموت.
فقال سيبويه : يا بليد، لموت الحمار خيرٌ من موت اللغة العربية.
