Making Things Worse

Proverb:
جاء يكحلها وأعماها
“He came to put Kohl in her eyes but he blinded her.”

Imam A’mash had an argument with his wife, so one of his friends tried to reconcile between them.

His friend said to the wife of Imam A’mash:

“A’mash is a great Shaykh, so do not be put off by:
– the weakness of his eye-sight,
– the slenderness of his legs,
– the weakness of his knees,
– and the immobility of his palm.”

Al-A’mash said to him: “Get lost! May God curse you, you identified some of my flaws to her which she didn’t even know existed in me!!”

تشاجر الإمام الأعمش مع زوجته، فطلب منه أحد اصدقائه أن يصلح بينهما…
فدخل إليها وقال: إن أبا محمد شيخ كبير، فلا يزهدنك فيه عمش عينه، ودقة ساقيه، وضعف ركبتيه، ونتن بطنه، وبخر فمه، وجمود كفه
فقال له الأعمش: أذهب قبحك الله، فقد أريتها من عيوبي ما لم تكن تعرفه!
