Saying ‘Ameen’ Loudly Or Softly

Saying: “Ameen” Loudly & Softly – قول آمين في الصلاة

Ibn Battal writes in his explanation of Sahih Bukhari:

وقال الطبرى: والخبر بالجهر بآمين والمخافتة بها صحيحان، وقد عمل بكل واحد منهما جماعة من علماء الأمة، وذلك يدل أنه مما خيرهم رسول الله فى العمل بأى ذلك شاءوا، ولذلك لم ينكر بعضهم على بعض ما كان منهم فى ذلك، وإن كنت مختارا خفض الصوت بها؛ إذ كان أكثر الصحابة والتابعين على ذلك
“At-Tabari said: As for the narrations which mention that ‘Ameen’ should be said loudly and softly, both are authentically transmitted.
A group of scholars have acted on each of these two views.
This proves that the Prophet gave them the choice to do however they wanted.
They did not criticize each other in this matter, EVEN THOUGH IT IS BETTER TO SAY ‘AMEEN’ SOFTLY, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE MAJORITY OF SAHABA AND TABI’IEN WERE UPON.”

[“Sharh Ibn Battal”, 3/495].

The View of the 4 Imams:

Saying it ‘Softly’ is the view of Imam Abu Hanifah.
Saying it ‘Loudly’ is the view of Imam Ahmad.
Both views are reported from Imam Malik and Imam Shafi’ii.

It cannot be said that only one of them is ‘Sunnah’ and the other is against the Sunnah.

The scholars of these Madhabs are not unaware of what has been narrated on this topic. They just understand them differently.

These issues are minor, they should not cause conflict & division.

We should respect both views…
