Keeping Secrets

About keeping secrets … it is said:

صدور الأبرار قبور الأسرار
“the chests of the pious (abraar),
are graveyards of secrets (asraar).”

Meaning: when a secret reaches the ear of a good person, it dies, it does not spread any further.
It was said to a pious man: “How do you keep a secret?” He replied: “I become its grave – أنا قبره”
If someone tells you a secret – take it with you, to your grave.

1- The Prophet is reported to have said:
لاَ يَسْتُرُ عَبْدٌ عَبْدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
“The servant (who conceals) the faults of others in this world, God would conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection.”
[“Sahih Muslim”, 2590b].

2- The Prophet is reported to have said:
مَنْ رَأَى عَوْرَةً فَسَتَرَهَا كَانَ كَمَنْ أَحْيَا مَوْءُودَةً
“He who sees something (i.e. a sin) which should be kept hidden and conceals it will be like one who has brought to life a girl buried alive.”
[“Abu Dawud”, 4891].

The scholars disagree about the grading of the second Hadith, but the meaning is: A person may commit a sin that would destroy his life reputation. If you hide it and don’t expose it, it is as if you have given that person another chance in life. That’s why it is compared to resurrecting a dead child.
