Warning To Muftis

As a Warning to Muftis – Ibn Umar once said:

تدري ما يريد هؤلاء؟ يريدون أن يجعلوا ظهورنا جسرًا لهم إلى جهنم
“Do you know what these people want?
They want to make our backs a bridge to Hell.”

[“Jami Bayan al-‘ilm”, 1585].

Rulers, Politicians, Judges, Business people, Average people, many of them: want the Mufti to find loopholes, bend the rules and legalise God’s prohibitions.

The Mufti is like a postman.
He is not God.
He can only clarify what God & His Messenger said.

The Qur’an says:
وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُون
“Do not cloak Truth with falsehood, or hide the truth when you know it.” [Qur’an 2:42].

And:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ مَا أَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالْهُدَىٰ مِن بَعْدِ مَا بَيَّنَّاهُ لِلنَّاسِ فِي الْكِتَابِ أُولَٰئِكَ يَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَلْعَنُهُمُ اللَّاعِنُون
“Those who suppress the proofs and the guidance We have revealed, after We have clarified them to humanity in the Scripture, God curses them, and so do others.” [Qur’an 2:159].

Unless there exists a genuine flexibility on a particular issue, then that should be encouraged, to remove hardship and facilitate ease for people.

The truth should be passed on as it is, it is then up to the people to take it or leave it.

وما علينا إلا البلاغ المبين!
