Code Of Honour Of Thieves

Back in the days, even thieves had a “code-of-honour” and some “self-respect” …

Dahm bin ‘Asqalah – دهم بن عسقلة – was the chief thief, in the Abbasid era. Before he died, he left the following will to his fellow-thieves:

“Do not steal from a woman,
do not steal from your neighbours,
do not steal from a noble person,
do not steal from a poor person.
Do not betray those who betray you.
When you steal, then steal half of the property and leave the other half for the people who live there.
And do not associate with scumbags!”
