Money Is Power

It is recommended for scholars and students to earn money and be financially independent from people.

Almost 1200 years ago, Ibn Abi Dunya wrote a book on ‘wealth’, titled: إصلاح المال

In there, he compiles many statements from the Qur’an, Sunnah and Salaf in which they praise wealth.

He quotes Sufyan al-Thawri saying:
الْمَالُ فِي هَذَا الزَّمَانِ سِلَاحُ الْمُؤْمِنِ
“In this day and age, wealth is the weapon of the believer.”
[“Islah al-Maal”, p. 42].

Many preachers these days rely on people’s charity, and thereby become dependent on them. Their job is to have a positive influence on the society. If their food & livelihoods depends on the people, they will naturally avoid opposing the evil practises that people indulge in, fearing for their livelihoods.

The “influencer” becomes the “influenced”.
