Insulting The Dead

It has been narrated by Ibn Asaakir:

When Ikrimah the son of Abu Jahl, came to Madinah, people gathered and said: “This is the son of Abu Jahl, this is the son of Abu Jahl!”
The Prophet said: “Don’t harm the living by insulting the dead.”

[“Tarikh Dimashq”, 11/758, with a good chain

* Ikrimah had converted to Islam, while his father Abu Jahl died on kufr. Abu Jahl means “father of ignorance”. His father was called the “pharaoh of this nation”, due to his emnity to Islam. Nevertheless, the Prophet did not allow his companions to disrespect his father in front of him.

Sadaq Allah al-Adheem:
“And you [O Mohammad] are truly a man of outstanding character.” [68:4].
