Stingiest Woman In History

Ancient books are full of stories about stingy people [البخلاء], but there are also some modern examples:

Hetty Green [1834-1916]

This was a wealthy American business-woman who went down as one of the world’s stingiest women in history. The Guinness Book of World Records her as: “the greatest miser” – despite being a multi-millionaire.

According to legends, she never turned on the heat or used hot water. She wore the same old black dress and underwear, and only changed them after they worn out. It is reported that she once searched half a night to find a stamp, worth 2-cents. Another tale asserts that she instructed her laundress to wash only the dirtiest parts of her dresses to save money on soap.
