Hadd Of Zina

Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali said after mentioning the fact that four witnesses are required to establish adultery & fornication:

ثم انظر إلى كثيف ستر الله كيف أسبله على العصاة من خلقه بتضييق الطريق في كشفه فنرجو أن لا نحرم هذا الكرم يوم تبلى السرائر
“Look then at how thick the veil of God is and how He uses it to cover the disobedient among His creatures by making the path to lift it so narrow.
We hope we will not be deprived of this generosity on the day when all secrets are laid bare!”

It is not enough for the witnesses to have seen two strangers alone in an intimate position, the witnesses must have physically witnessed the act:

كما يغيب المرود في المكحلة والرشاء في البئر
“Like the Kohl stick disappears into the Kohl bottle,
or like a rope enters into the well.”

Unless someone commits Zina in the open fully naked, it is very difficult for four witnesses to see this with their own eyes.
