Standing Up Out Of Respect

Standing up for people out of Respect –

When Sa’d arrived, the Prophet said to the Ansaar:

“STAND UP FOR YOUR LEADER.”

[“Sahih Bukhari”, 3043].

Based on this, most scholars say that it is recommended to honour parents, elders, friends, leaders, scholars and pious people – by standing up for them when they arrive.

Imam Nawawi said in his explanation of ‘Sahih Muslim’, (12/93):

“This is evidence for honoring virtues people, and for receiving them by standing up for them when they arrive. The majority of scholars have used this as evidence to recommend standing up.”

However, some arrogant people demand that people stand up for them and feel proud when people stand up for them.

This is forbidden, as the Prophet said:

“WHOEVER WISHES THAT HE BE RECEIVED BY MEN STANDING THEN LET HIM TAKE HIS SEAT IN THE HELLFIRE.”
