Moses & The Tablets …

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim wrote a book, compiling evidences that divorce in state of extreme anger is invalid and that the person in such a state is excused.

It’s called: إغاثة اللهفان في حكم طلاق الغضبان

The issue is disagreed upon, but one of the evidences he brought forward, I found very interesting:

قال العلامة ابن القيم رحمه الله: ان موسى “صلوات الله عليه” لم يكن ليلقي الواحا كتبها الله تعالى فيها كلامه من على راسه الى الارض فيكسرها اختيارا منه لذلك ولا كان فيه مصلحة لبني اسرائيل وكذلك جره هارون بلحيته وراسه وهو اخوه وانما حمله على ذلك الغضب فعذره الله سبحانه به ولم يعتب عليه بما فعل اذ كان مصدره الغضب الخارج عن قدرة العبد واختياره فالمتولد عنه غير منسوب الى اختياره ورضاه به يوضحه. إغاثة اللهفان في حكم طلاق الغضبان (ص: 34).

It is regarding the incident, when Moses came back from the mountain and found his people worshipping the cow.

The Qur’an states:

[وألقى الألواح][
And he threw down the tablets!] [7:150].

And Ibn al-Qayyim argues, he was excused and wasn’t held accountable for throwing the tablets in which God’s words were written, because he was extremely angry.
