Selling Religion

Ibn Rushd is reported to have said 800 years ago:

‎التجاره بالأديان هي التجاره الرائجه في المجتمعات التي ينتشر فيها الجهل فإن أردت التحكم في جاهل عليك أن تغلف كل باطل بغلاف ديني

“Trading with religion is a popular form of trade in societies where ignorance is widespread. If you want to control an ignorant person, just wrap every falsehood with a religious cover (and he will comply).”

This is not only true for Islam, but all other religions.
Many people get blackmailed with false interpretations of religious texts.
Who can think of some examples?
