Al-Shawkani On Music

Imam al-Shawkani writes:

وقد ألف أبو الفتوح الغزالي كتاباً سماه : (بوارق الإلماع في تكفير من يحرم السماع)؛ وهذه التسمية في غاية الشناعة ، ولكنه كان يذكر في ذلك الكتاب مثلاً حديث أنه صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم سمع الجواري يغنين بالدف كما في حديث الربيع بنت معوذ بن عفرا، ثم يقول بعده : فمن قال أن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم سمع حراماً، وما منع عن سماع حرام، واعتقد ذلك، فقد كفر بالاتفاق

“Abu al-Futuh al-Ghazali wrote a book in which he made Takfir on people who forbid listening (to musical instruments), he titled it: “بوارق الإلماع في تكفير من يحرم السماع”.
This book has an extremely heinous title, but in it, he mentioned the Hadith in which the Prophet listened to the slave-girls who sang while they were beating the Daff (which is a musical instrument).
He then said: whoever says that the Prophet listened to the haraam (forbidden), or did not forbid what is haraam (forbidden), and he believes this – such a person commits Kufr by agreement (of all scholars.”
