Mao Zedong & the killing of 1,000,000,000 sparrows

Sparrows eat grains and China was facing food shortages. So the Communist Leader Mao Zedong launched the “Smash Sparrows Campaign”, from 1958 to 1962 in China… killing 1 billion sparrows.

What they overlooked was the fact that these birds also ate insects.

With no sparrows to eat them, locust populations ballooned, swarming the country and eating up the crops – causing even more food shortages!!!

This Ecological imbalance is credited with exacerbating the Great Chinese Famine, in which 15–45 million people died of starvation.

Mao ordered the end of the campaign against sparrows.

The Chinese government eventually resorted to importing 250,000 sparrows from the Soviet Union to replenish their population.
