Shaykh al-Albani: Not everything in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim is Sahih – محمد ناصر الدين الألباني

1- Shaykh al-Albani said:

أن هناك بعض الأحاديث [لا تبلغ مرتبة] الحسن !!! فضلاً عن مرتبة الصحة في صحيح البخاري ، فضلا عن صحيح مسلم
المسلمون كافة لا فرق بين عالم أو متعلم أو جاهل مسلم . . كلهم يجمعون على أنه لا عصمة لأحد بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
من هنا يروى عن الإمام الشافعي رضي الله عنه أنه قال : أبى الله أن يتم إلا كتابه .
“There are some narrations in ‘Sahih Bukhari’ which don’t even meet the grading of ‘Hassan’, let alone ‘Sahih’!!
And we are not even talking about ‘Sahih Muslim’.
All Muslims – the knowledgeable and the ignorants – know that there is no infallibility after the Prophet, peace be upon him.
In this vein, it is narrated that Imam Shafi’ii said: “God has not allowed for any book to be perfect, except His Book (i.e. the Qur’an).”

2- Shaykh al-Albani also said:

جهل بعض الناشئين الذي يتعصبون لـ ” صحيح البخاري “، وكذا لـ ” صحيح مسلم ” تعصبا أعمى ، ويقطعون بأن كل ما فيهما صحيح ! ويقابل هؤلاء بعض الكتاب الذين لا يقيمون لـ ” الصحيحين ” وزنا ، فيردون من أحاديثهما ما لا يوافق عقولهم وأهواءهم
“Some young people are fanatically devoted to ‘Sahih al-Bukhari’, and likewise to ‘Sahih Muslim’.
They ignorantly and adamantly insist that everything in them is authentic (Sahih).
In contrast to them, some writers have no respect at all for the ‘Sahihayn’, and they reject of their hadiths any that are not in accordance with their rational thinking and their whims and desires.”

3- Shaykh al-Albani also said:

والصحيحان هما أصح الكتب بعد كتاب الله تعالى باتفاق علماء المسلمين
وليس معنى ذلك أن كل حرف أو لفظة أو كلمة في “الصحيحين” هو بمنزلة ما في “القرآن” لا يمكن أن يكون فيه وهم أو خطأ في شيء من ذلك من بعض الرواة
“All scholars agree that the ‘Sahihayn’ (i.e. Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) are the most authentic (religious) scriptures after the Book of God (i.e. the Qur’an).
This does not mean that every letter, word and statement in the ‘Sahihayn’ is on the same level as the Qur’an, in the sense that it is not possible to contain errors and mistakes from some of the narrators.”

This is correct.
On one extreme we have Quranists, who REJECT EVERYTHING.
On the other extreme we have Hadith dogmatists, who ACCEPT EVERYTHING.
Both these camps are ignorant and mistaken.
The truth is in between these two extremes.
The ‘Sahihayn’ are the most authentic books after the Qur’an, and all Ahadith in them are authentic – except a few.
